The Young Ones

Post by Tacoronte »

On October 14, the great British singer Cliff Richards turned 80, who is now on tour celebrating his 80th birthday with concerts in 2020 and 2021.

That is why a friend sent me a link to the video of the movie “The Young Ones”, released in 1961, where he sings the song of the same title accompanied by the wonderful group The Shadows.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_mG-wxmbLA

Apart from the beauty of the song, I was surprised to see that, on the beach where the story takes place, all the men in bathing suits, children and adults, in the foreground and in the background, wore speedos. All, all.

What a contrast to the current situation!

I watched the clip of the song "The Young Ones" and realized right away that it was not the original recording of the song, but a more recent one. On the subject of the swimwear,I have a memory of Cliff wearing a speedo in one of his movies. I thought it might have been in this or Summer Holiday, but I scrolled through them and couldn't find it. Hopefully someone reading this might remember and let me know.Failing that,I will maybe find the time to watch them.

Many thanks for providing that link. I had this image of Cliff jumping out of a bus wearing a black speedo, which obviously tied in with the theme of the Summer Holiday movie, but when I scrolled through the movie I couldn't find that scene. On a side note, there are some great songs on the soundtrack. Foot Tapper is a good workout for budding guitarists,The Next Time is a beautiful song well sung by Cliff, and Bachelor Boy is part of my repertoire which I sang regularly at a care home(before the pandemic). I really must find the time to sit down and watch the movie.

Makes you wonder if it was the norm for guys to wear swim briefs back then, why did it change so dramatically. Women's swimwear did not change dramatically. Still the same styles....just skimpier bikinis. Still waiting for history to repeat the speedo fashion for us.

I looked up Summer Holiday and came across the image on this page of him in the black swim brief.

Hi Nate. Back in the sixties there wasn't the same negativity towards swim briefs as there is now. I'm sure seeing guys like Cliff wearing one probably inspired lots of guys to follow suit.I know he wasn't that well known over in your country, but he was a huge star in Britain, and is still going strong here at 80. I have been buying his calendar for my best friend's wife every Christmas for more years than I care to remember(lol).

Guess the question really is what started the negativity and why? I'm sure the shorts swimwear for guys wasn't missing on the beach like it is in the video, but shorts were shorter back then than now too. I will continue to hope fashion repeats for us while I still represent the swim brief wearers. Luckily I haven't experienced any negativity as of yet and have found my choice has at least been tolerated.

I read, or maybe seen a video, that the change for men happened (they wouldn't dream, or have the ability to force it on women) happened in the Americas (and their "we're not the same, but you are" cousins Candidians) when politicians and ecclesiasticals wanted to stem the "gay agenda" so everything was cauterized which might be considered gay - shorts, speedos and even roller blades (yes tests shown that's how the virus travels). This attitude was spread throughout the western world, probably due to hollywood or America's influence on societies the world over. Also the most loudest and boisterous always drown out the rest.

Coupled with feeble minds who are reticent about what others can do but if it were the reverse would surely start protests and movements about how they are being victimized or objectified or have their rights trampled on - look at this idiot here https://youtu.be/4eI8BV70P48 (she actually wrote a paper about man thongs and got into university, granted the guy was probably wearing briefs but in her all entitled, superior brain it was a thong)
Women are happy to have the privilege and entitlement of being able to flaunt their bodies however many ways. And most men would unfortunately chime in with the whole "oh no, it's unsightly, wrong, name calling, body shaming..." etcetera
