Shopping experience

Post by David_NC »

Today I was able to visit a nearby Jockey store. The store was divided half women half men. There was a wide selection of boxers, trunks and briefs. There wasn’t a single bikini which the Elance bikini was once a great seller of theirs, there wasn’t a single string bikini and no men’s thong in site. I did pick up some of their new sports briefs because I liked the patterns. I asked the nice Asian lady who checked me out if they had the men’s thong in the store, she said they didn’t only online. I think she was slightly embarrassed, but this could have been cultural or because she was a lady in her 50s and I a man in my 30s. But working in an underwear store she shouldn’t have been embarrassed. Also, it seems stupid that a company that is primarily underwear doesn’t have some of all their products in their own stores. I’ve in another Jockey store and again, bikinis, string bikinis and thongs weren’t there but online only. Seems a shame, I would think they would sell better if you could buy them right then and there.
Has anyone else experienced a shocked sales person if/when you asked or purchased a thong or skimpy bikini?

Hi David. It does seem strange that a company that is known for its underwear does not have its full range in store. Also a bit off-putting that the sales assistant seemed embarrassed by your perfectly reasonable question about the availability of thongs. Perhaps if more guys like you were to persist in asking for thongs and string bikinis, then the person in the store who is responsible for ordering the stock would realise that there is a market for them.
On the subject of shocked sales assistants. Being of a vintage who remembers when thongs, bikinis and g-strings were readily available in high street stores, I don't recall any shocked looks as I handed over my basket with enough skimpies to keep a stripper in business for a week. I was always a bit apprehensive that the assistant might have a problem scanning the label and would have to shout "how much is this fishnet thong?" over the heads of the queue standing behind me! Nowadays I think I would be unfazed to ask an assistant if they had thongs etc in store, but I imagine the look and answer I would get would be one of are you serious? A thong?lol.

Most of the mainline menswear makers "FTL, Hanes, Jockey, Calvin Klein seem to be ashamed of the bikinis, string bikinis and thongs that they make for men. Just go to Hanes and FTLs facebook pages and you will be hard-pressed to find any photos or posts about their line of non-conventional men's underwear... By non-con, I mean bikini, string bikini and thong underwear.

If I were the manager of a menswear store, I would stock all styles of men's underwear and let the customer decide what they want, instead of giving them the "take it or leave it" approach.

Just a little update. I received an email from Jockey asking about my experience during my recent visit. I completed the form and was sure to mention my disappointment in there not being any string bikini or thong options for men in the store. I also mentioned that it would be nice to have thong option in their sport mesh collection - the string bikini can be a bit tight but the brief is very comfortable and a thong would be a great addition.

That's good that you were able to submit your feedback to Jockey.Time will tell if it has the desired effect and leads to them expanding the choice of styles in their stores. It might be worth your while to pop in more often just to see if they have listened to their customer(s),and it would also show them that you are serious about buying the thongs and bikinis should they begin to have them on site. You would think that in these tough times for bricks and mortar shops, any retail outlet would welcome regular customers who they can rely on to make a purchase. I don't suppose they have too many guys like you asking for thongs,so one would imagine you might become familiar to the staff over time,so it's just as well you're not shy or embarrassed about being "that thong guy!" lol. Keep us posted on any developments!

Jockey used to have thongs for men back in the day. They most likely still do. Maybe the demographic of your region doesnt warrant stocking those items? A good manager would look at the sales of the category and if not worth holding the stock not carry the items. I personally didn't like the fit or cut of their thongs when I tried them probably 20 years ago. So I never got into the brand and stopped shopping it. I prefer to do my underwear shopping in person. I do a fair bit online as well now to get less mainstream brands. But I am lucky that where I live we have department stores that stock a wide variety of designer brands and styles such as gstring, thongs, and fashion jocks. As well Topdrawers is based here and they have a brick and mortar shop so I can physically peruse the new arrivals and see the actual garment before purchasing. I always spent an inordinate amount of time hanging out in the underwear section when a child with mom or dad while shopping for other things. Now I love watching what other men are looking at or getting. Is great to not be shy about my purchases either. Have received some great reactions from some clerks and shoppers when the notice.

No, but in the past 12 months, I have noticed that many brick -n- mortar stores have taken men's bikinis, string bikinis and thongs off their shelves and sell nothing but boxer briefs and Y-front briefs only. Actually it's virtually impossible to find thongs for men anywhere but online!

Go to any department store and the women's lingerie section takes up almost 25% of the store's space... but their selection of men's underwear is reduced to a single aisle that spans 20ft X 4ft

Frederick's of Hollywood (gone now) used to sell a small selection of men's bikinis, thongs and g-strings.

Now, in the USA, about the only brick -n- mortar stores that you can still go to to buy sexy underwear for men are adult stores that sell sex toys, lotions, lingerie and adult videos.

They still do, but only online. And I don't like the look of them! If I buy a thong, it has to look the way I like it... like a string bikini brief with a thong back.
