I went to a local hobby convention this weekend and I shared a room with a friend. I wanted a little break from my daily life and since the hotel where the convention was located had a pool, I decided to stay there this weekend.
The hobby is know for being very LGBT friendly (though it's not exclusively LGBT) so people tend to be a bit more open-minded about what goes on in public areas, including at the pool. I packed a few of my swim bikinis, but also a pair of shorts and a pair of square trunks. As soon as I went to the pool that Saturday afternoon, I knew I would see a few speedo users so I wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. There were like 4 other speedo users.
I first removed my swim shorts, but kept my square trunks on. Even though there was another local at the pool who knew me and I was a bit afraid he would see me in my speedos that had 1.75" sides, eventually I calmed down and took the courage to strip take off my square trunks that were covering my actual speedos. I figured that if he saw me in them and said something about it, I would just admit to it and say I wear them for practical and comfort reasons.
Eventually I was comfortable enough to swim and walk around the pool and no one said anything about my swimsuit. One of the other speedo users talked to me to ask me if I was an attendee from the convention to which I confirmed. We had chatted for a few minutes and I told him that it was nice to be able to wear speedos at the pool without anyone caring or giving us weird looks. He agreed with me, though he also admitted to wearing board shorts some of the times.
The weather was mostly sunny and in the upper 90s. The water and speedos felt great. I came back later that night with a swimsuit with narrower sides and a green camo pattern and no one else said anything about it.
Before I left the convention I went to the pool one final time. I really enjoyed my time at the convention for many different reasons, but being able to wear my bikini swim suits was the highlight of my time there.
I'm definitely going to try to set up a pool where I live to go every weekend and use my swim suits without worrying about getting weird looks.

Jason: Congratulations! Sounds like you have had a real breakthrough. Three words: DON'T LOOK BACK! Continue building the courage of your convictions. It's your body, your comfort and support. You are NOT there to please others; you are there to please YOURSELF. You are not cruising or making a spectacle of yourself. Keep up the good work, and keep us informed of your continued progress. You GO, guy!!!

Re: Weekend Getaway
Thanks! I've been taking small steps over the last 18 months doing that, including in my vacations in Miami and Québec City. It also encourages me to get into shape. I was talking with another local about possibly hosting a pool party at the same convention if the hotel has a pool.Microbikiniman wrote: Mon Jun 09, 2025 3:03 pm Jason: Congratulations! This is coming from a guy who avoided the beach and pool a few years ago because I had worse self-conscious body issues in public and didn't even want to wear shorts.
