Will thongs ever be mainstream ?

Post by Thongwearer »

Does anyone think thongs will ever be mainstream or accepted for men? Do we want them to be or do we like being different ?

I'm glad that they're somewhat more mainstream now, but I still like the idea of wearing something different from egag most guys wear. I think that's part of the appeal...at least it is for me....that and the fact that they're s4xy in a way boxers will never be (and more comfy, too!).

I am hopeful that they are becoming more “mainstream” and less stereotypical. When Aswemove and MeUndies came out with men’s thongs I was so excited to see them becoming more normalized. I think it’ll just make options even better and more socially acceptable.
If only others gave them a shot and saw what all the hype was about, things would be move a lot faster!

I thing mainstream and acceptance may be to different things. I am hopeful that there is wider acceptance of thongs for men, men wearing thongs and more availability in brick and mortar shops. But, I don’t thing thongs for men will be mainstream. I’m fine with that. I have to admit I’m happy to be in the minority and a bit avant-garde. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be happy to see more men in Bikini and Thong styles. I do think there is too much social pressure for thongs to be mainstream, but I do see more acceptance for the wearing of thongs.

I think they will be mainstream and probabably not only thongs but also different "looking" underwear like mesh or lace materials. Look at the bigger brands. Calvin Klein had 2 models of thongs maximum and now more then 7 and they are on the top of the Briefs section. Tezenis brand which is veeeery conservative in mens underwear start to experimenting with lace boxers couple months ago. I was sceptical about that even last year, but now I think it will happen some day and it will not take long.

I think the only way thongs and other skimpy styles will become mainstream in the future, will depend on their availability in shops on the high streets wherever you are. It is depressing to see the lack of choice in most stores, with boxer shorts and trunks outnumbering an occasional slip, if you're lucky. I do remember the days when large department stores in the UK, like BHS,C&A,Debenhams and Topman, to name a few, had lots of thongs, g-strings and bikinis on display alongside the more conservative y-fronts and briefs. Perhaps if some big name celebrities were to endorse thongs in the way that Mark Wahlberg did with CK trunks, more guys might be tempted to give them a try.

TANGA TANGA: Do you really think that the stores really matters today? A lot of people buys online today and the options are already there. I feel the marketing of other styles still missing, but I was really surprised by the mentioned Tezenis to trying something new and it is a sign that there is growing trend for these products.

I know that most of the skimpy underwear that we buy is almost exclusively sold online, but there must be millions of men who wouldn't even think about buying their underwear online. I just think there is more chance that a guy browsing through the menswear department in a store and seeing a thong on a hanger, or mannequin, will make him think it looks fun and different and maybe the wife/girlfriend will appreciate it, or maybe some ladies will be looking for underwear for their man and will see a thong next to their regular boring boxers and imagine his face when he sees it. I do believe people would consider buying something skimpy on impulse if it's there in front of them, rather than going to the hassle of ordering online and possibly having to send things back or have the package opened by the wrong person at home.

I definitely agree they need to be more accessible in stores. I’ve said the same about swim briefs too here in the US. I personally don’t mind them not being mainstream I just hate the stigma attached to thongs as a guy.

I think this was already discussed in another thread. We see more and more underwear companies coming out with men's thongs, but that doesn't mean the number of male thongers has increased. Male thongers just have more options now.

In order for men's thongs to become mainstream, I think the whole male fashion industry has to change. Clothes made for men are not revealing, and it is kind of a faux pas for guys to show too much skin in public. Women's clothes have gotten smaller and skimpier over the years, whereas men's clothes have gotten baggier. Female nudity is celebrated, whereas male nudity is frowned upon. That's why men are hesitant to wear thongs as underwear and swimwear. They don't want to be called out for wearing something too revealing.

As a male thonger, I don't mind being in the minority. But, whenever I go to a beach, I don't see any other guy in a thong. It is hard to embrace my individuality and uniqueness when I am the only guy sporting a thong.
