That's definitively a big difference between US and rest of the world, or at least Europe.
Apparently seeing someone with a swim brief is like an event in US. Here in France, and all the other European countries I have visited, swim brief is mandatory for any pool (I m not talking about beach), so you have no choice, therefore it's normal to see all men wearing swim brief.
On the contrary, on beaches, very few are wearing swim brief, let's be honest. I guess it's part of the globalisation of the ideas and part of the body shaming, puritanism and hypocrisy of the society regarding nudity.
