I saw them first at H&M when I was 18 or 19, and later at other stores but I was never really interested.
The one who triggerded me to try was my gf! It was an unusually hot summer and she told me how cool and nice it was to only wear a thong under her skirt. They were still sold at H&M (but sadly soon disappeared) so I bought one to try. Well, not with a skirt but loose shorts. I loved it! From that on I wore thongs more and more often, at first only in the summer and later always in my spare time. But not at work or social gatherings, -until I tried low rise G-strings :D

I don't remember, but I bought my first pair of men's thongs at Target. They were OK.

My senior year of high school. In the late 90s, even in small town conservative USA, Bon-Ton sold men's thongs. I didn't care for boxers or tighty whities so bought a tube and gave them a try. I loved the support and comfort. Now flash forward, thongs are my go to underwear.

Wow I have not heard the name Bon-Ton in a hundred years. My grandmother had a catalog/flyer from them back in the 90s - I don't recall underwear in it though. I equate them to like a k-mart back in day.

Being from PA, I know the Bon-Ton as well. Brings back some mall memories, for sure. I'm not sure if I ever got underwear there, tho.

Around the age of 23 I wanted to keep to the hip style form fitting briefs but there wasn’t much variety in the stores to shop discreetly in person. After looking online and making an Amazon account I found bikini briefs. Finding a liking to how they ride up, I decided to try joe boxer thongs I found at Kmart then wanted more. After that I got over “if I get caught, I go into hiding from everyone I know, feeling shamed and embarrassed, I kept buying more and haven’t went back to briefs since.

Man I thought I was the only one buying joe boxer thongs at k-mart back in the day, but apparently not. I still remember the rush of bringing them up to the register. I wish you could still go to department stores to buy them, it’s not quite the same as ordering them online. Lots of good memories in those joe boxer thongs over the years, wearing one at the moment actually.

Welcome to the forum.I'm sure many of us will identify with the rush you describe of going up to a cash register with your thongs.

OMG, I can remember that rush so well. I remember going into Macy’s and peaking in the underwear section. I’d find a tube or box of thongs and have this rush of adrenaline. It was like I was almost doing something wrong yet so very good. I remember I’d be looking around to see if anyone was paying attention. Then when it came time to purchase the selected thongs I’d have a whole other rush. It was even more intense when the thongs were not in a package. When I found thong swimwear there was a whole other level of excitement. I remember a few young women clerks that made suggestive comments with big grins. “Are you going to wear this to the beach? Can I join you?” I must have turned about 50 shades of red the first few times I purchased thong swimwear. But by then I was hooked. In some ways I miss those days when thongs were readily available at my local store.

Yes, I remember that rush too -- at least when I started intentionally buying them rather than an accidental purchase! I guess some things change (at least for some of us) as we get older. When I bought a pack of US Polo Assn string bikini briefs in person in Walmart a few weeks ago I was already back out to my car before I realized I'd been rolling all over the store with them in plain view in the shopping cart. <SHRUG> I don't know if I'd have done that 30 years ago as a teenager!

But for sure I would have as I got just a bit older, as I have always had some in-store purchases to go along with the online ones, even as I was getting the majority of my underwear from Prevail but even moreso with Kiniki. And K-Mart for sure, back in HS all the way through to almost the very end. Joe Boxer lost me in their last iterations of their string bikinis and thongs, but 15-20 years ago, they'd have been in the (actual, physical) shopping cart routinely!
