I call them a thong. I have some, and they are how I define a thong.

To me a g-string is (as others have said) just a string T in back made up of a thin "string" strap. But I also define the front, which is more of a vertical pouch/patch that goes fairly straight up to the string waist band, and is quite narrow, just covering what needs to be covered. I know there are variations, but at least to me, any design with leg openings that sweep up and to the hip isn't quite a g-string. I guess I'm not alone. Here's what the Oxford Dictionary says of a g-string,"a garment consisting of a narrow strip of cloth that covers the genitals and is attached to a waistband".
