For as long as I can remember growing up in England, I always wore "Speedo's", Mum bought them for me, nothing special, everyone wore them.
When I started to earn some of my own money, we lived in Cornwall, which is one of the warmest places in the UK, as well as some great beaches.
I remember checking out a Gentlemen's Outfitter and discovering Hom swimwear, that had very brief sides, maybe a centimetre wide, a nice pouch and full cover on the rear, in an irridesant blue, I loved them. It's such a shame you can't get Hom swimwear like that now.
I've tried some Kiniki swimwear, I have one pair that I like, but most of my swimwear now are Micro Bikinis from Cocksox, they are a little on the small side, but are so comfortable, I have a few of their swim thongs as well, which are just brilliant.
Recently I've been wearing normal Ice Silk very thin thongs and bikinis and wear those to the beach, no one can really tell that they are meant to be underwear, but they are briefer than anything else I've seen on the beach.
Anyway, thats my 10 cents worth.

I've always been comfortable wearing a briefer form of swimwear. Perhaps because I never transitioned to boxer shorts or similar for underwear growing up. As a teenager I would wear swimming shorts on vacation with family but late teens and early 20's I transitioned solely to swimming briefs. I much prefer the fit and feel of them and I hate being in water or being wet wearing baggy shorts.
For lane swimming I wear traditional 5cm swimming Speedo or Arena branded briefs. I've noticed a lot more men are wearing these nowadays in the UK at swimming pools.
Then for resort wear I transition to a more bikini style men's swim brief; Kiniki Riviera or HOM or Joe Snyder bikini.
Finally for beach wear I prefer to wear a swim thong if the beach is not too populated; Olaf Benz substring or Kiniki,

Like many of you, my comfort level depends on my circumstances. If I'm at the pool with my children and grandchildren I'm usually wearing swim shorts--not long ones like board shorts, can't stand those!--but if it's just me and my wife at the pool or beach I'm usually in an Arena or Speedo brief with 2- or 3-inch sides.
If I'm laying in the sun on my deck it's a 1Kingsky mesh thong with string sides (about 1/4 inch or less) and if I'm out at the lake by myself I'm either nude or in a Joe Snyder bulge thong if there's several other people around. But if it's only regulars and friends at the lake then I'm nude. Would prefer to be nude on my deck but my back yard isn't that private

!
I've recently bought a couple of swim thongs by Olaf Benz and want to wear them on the beach, but I've gotta work up the courage to do so. In North Carolina, where I live, in most beach communities it's legal to wear thongs on the beach (have to cover genitalia and anus; not sure about pubic hair but I keep myself shaved down there anyway!

) and it's also legal on any beach areas that are national parks.

I'm taking babysteps. A few weeks ago I went on vacation in Dallas and I stayed with some friends. I brought over three different swim briefs (2) and one swim bikini with 1" sides.
Seeing that it was a busy hotel because of a convention and because it was so hot outside, I went to the pool the first thing in the morning when the pool opened to avoid crowds.
On that Saturday and Sunday, I was able to wear two of them but I went to the pool each time with my swim shorts on top of them. Once I was at the pool and making sure I was by myself, I removed my shorts and just stayed with one of my swim briefs and one of my swim bikinis. I felt much more comfortable in the pool than with shorts. I liked the swim bikini more.
On one of those days, two of my hotel roommates went down to the pool and I put my shorts back on. However, one of them had one of those Desmitt swim bikinis with 1" sides under his shorts and our other roommate (with just regular shorts) joined me at the pool. Seeing that I wasn't the only one who liked swim briefs/bikinis, I took off my shorts and continued in the pool taking turns between talking and swimming.
I'm going to find other opportunities where I will take chances in wearing them until I feel more comfortable doing so. It has encouraged me to get more fit too. I'm a little bit too pear shaped for my taste.

Thanks! I might try tomorrow after work to go to a nearby pool. I really want to work on my tanning before the end of summer.
I won't be doing much swimming because I just had one of my ears pierced and can't get chlorine on it.

I was fortunate and purchased some Pool Boy swim briefs from cheapundies.com, they list for $30, typically on sale for $19 and I snagged three for $10 each - I figured if they didn't fit good I could trash them and not be out too much money. One of the pairs were patriotic - I decided to wear them under my swim shorts with the mesh liner cut out. I was swimming in my parents pool with just my wife and daughter - my parents had taken our youngest son inside for a nap. I'm not sure what came over me, but I slipped my shorts off and just swam around for 20/30 minutes in just my swim briefs. My daughter noticed by shorts on the side of the pool, my wife made a comment that daddy is wear a swim suit that looks like what he sleeps in and she just said okay. I sleep in Jockey low rise briefs and she has seen me wear those. We recently went to the beach, I wore my swim briefs under my shorts - I never took my shorts off, but I did have my swim briefs on.

Hey Oldermuscledud - I frequent Atlantic beach/Emerald Isle and the normal is knee length board shorts. I have noticed that Carolina beach is more receptive of mens swim briefs; there was discussion one time about mens thongs and part of the argument was the genital and the anus had to be covered. To me I read that has a "normal" thong would/should be acceptable, but a g-string style bottom would not. I also think this disucssion was for both men and women. And someone I follow on IG has worn a thong in the northern beaches, like Hatteras - most likely in the lesser populated beaches.

Hey, David_NC! Yes, I don't think a g-string bottom is legal unless it has a wider strap between your ass cheeks....hopefully soon I'll get to try out the swim thong on the beach!

I'm a very hairy masculine guy, and I have confidently worn the skimpiest suits at the Beach all my life. I prefer the tight flat-front look, wearing male or female bikinis, thongs or g-strings. After age 30 you become "invisible" anyway, no one pays any attention.
