Influences on choice as a youngster

A place to talk about underwear in general that doesn't fit in thongs or bikinis.

I attribute my influence in underwear to my enjoyment of seeing females in bikinis and thongs. I guess what really got me going was one day I received a catalog that contained different catalogs you could request in the mail. Looking through it I noticed a catalog or two for men's underwear. Thinking it was Undergear and maybe Bodyaware that I came across. The covers were of guys in skimpy underwear, which most likely were a bikini cuts. Seeing those really got me wanting to give them a try and see what they were like. Of course at the time I didn't have a way to order without going through my parents, so it wasn't until I was about 17 that I saw a Kmart ad adverting string bikinis for guys. As soon as I saw that I made a beeline to Kmart. May have been a day to do that beeline, but I made sure I got my hands on a pair fairly quickly. Slipping them on for the first time was the beginning of my fascination of bikinis and thongs.

I had never seen any male wearing bikini briefs before that. Before that day, I just assumed that all men and boys wore Y-front briefs like I did.
Incidentally, seeing my cousin in bikini briefs only happened because my parents split up and my brother and I went with my mom to live with her sister. Had my parents not separated and divorced, I may have never seen another male wearing anything but Y-front briefs. Here it is, 37 years later and I could still be trapped in boring, mundane Y-fronts... blissfully oblivious to the fact that men CAN wear underwear that is daring, fun and sexy.

Hello! I’m new to the forum but not the blog. I have participated in the Married Str8 Trio topics in the past and thought I would join the forum as well. I have been wearing thongs, bikinis and string bikini underwear off and on since 2001, during my freshman year of college before the start of my sophomore year. I started incorporating these styles of underwear in my daily wear in 2012 and haven’t looked back. Like most pre pubescent adolescent boys, I liked looking at the section of the catalogues that showed women’s underwear and have always been been interested in wearing minimal/sexy underwear that was made for men.I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when it was almost normal to see the athletes, actor or musician/singer wearing men’s bikini or skimpier. These men weren’t viewed as gay or feminine and women wanted them and men wanted to be like them. I knew of men in my family, uncles, cousins etc that wore bikini briefs and string bikinis which was pretty normal underwear to wear during this time period. One of my uncles in particular, was in his early 20’s when I was around 12/13 and stayed with us for short period of time after getting out of the Air Force. During this time we had to share a room until he got his own place and naturally by sharing a space I saw his underwear. This is when I knew bikini briefs and string bikinis were the underwear for me. My uncle was so cool, he was masculine and had lots of different beautiful girlfriends and I wanted to be just like him and wore what he wore. He had different styles and patterns, mostly animal prints like zebra, snake and cheetah, this was intriguing to me as my dad wore those ugly brown military briefs. During this period underwear for men began to change with boxers then boxer briefs being what men were to wear. I was in high school during this period and began to wear white and plaid boxers. I did this up until halfway through my freshman year of college. During college when I was searching for underwear that provided extra support more than the boxers that I wore all throughout high school. I happend to stumble accross thongs for men while a freshman in college shopping at Target and happend to stumble across Jake Taylor thongs for men. I was intrigued and bought a pack from then on I was hooked. This discovery of thongs for men reopened the door for me to wear bikinis and string bikinis that intrigued me at 12/13 and I began to wear this style as well. I would wear them in secret and no one I dated, friends or family knew of my underwear choice. Fast forward to the present, I typically wear string bikinis or tanga style briefs daily with bikini briefs, thongs and g strings close runner ups. I like to think of my underwear collection as a buffet that can satisfy my appetite of the day. My wife doesn’t mind me wearing them and that makes me feel good and feel as though I don’t have to do it in private. I wear them because I find them comfortable and they make me feel good about myself but having her seal of approval is the extra icing on the cake. I’m looking forward to chatting with other like minded guys and hearing different experiences!

Welcome to the forum sir!

Just curious, did your affinity for skimpy underwear begin as an interest in women's panties, and then that led to you to wearing men's bikinis, thongs, etc?

I have always had a thing for women's panties and have worn them during times in my life, but now wear only men's bikinis, thongs, etc. I am not gay... I love and desire women, but my interest in bikinis, string bikinis and thongs first began with wearing women's panties. My first wife actually insisted that I wear her panties during foreplay! :P

I'm curious as to how many men here, both gay and straight, began their underwear passion by wearing panties?

Thanks JustSomeDude71 for the welcome!

Nah I never had any interest in wearing women’s panties, just enjoyed looking at women wearing them in catalogues when I was around 12/13. That’s cool that your wife enjoys you wearing them. It’s always nice having a supportive wife that doesn’t ridicule you for choices in underwear. I’m fortunate mine enjoys seeing me in my underwear.

I just always had an interest in minimal underwear styles and seeing them on women made me curious if they were available for men and getting that confirmation from my uncles underwear style sealed that deal for me. I remember when I was around 12 I asked my mom to buy me a 3 pair of Jockey Elance Bikinis (the ones that came in the tube) and a pack of Jockey String Bikinis and she wouldn’t. I guess she thought they were too sexy for my age and I remember her wanting to know why I wanted them. It was too embarrassing for me to explain to my mom that I wanted to know because I snuck and saw what my uncle wore. My dad wore full cut briefs so naturally that’s what my mom bought me.

I think most women admire the confidence that a man shows when he wears skimpy underwear. No so much that he may or may not look good in them, but that he's confident enough in himself to wear them.

In your free time, do a google search for vintage Jockey ad; these are the underwear ads I saw growing up. They didn't screw with my mind or make me fell less positive about myself. They made me think wow these men have confidence; you'll see the likes of Jim Palmar, Jo Jo White, and Craig Morton all wearing skimpy bikinis. You may also find the mid-90s ad with the medical professionals and two of the men are wearing Jockey string bikinis; when I saw that it confirmed for me that any man can wear sexy underwear.

You used a word... "Confidence"
Yes, Confidence!
I may not have the body of a Calvin Klein underwear model and I doubt that I ever will, but one thing has always come up with all of the women that I have ever been with and that is they admired the confidence that I showed by wearing bikinis and thongs instead of boxers or Y-front briefs. Confidence in one's self will attract a woman more than muscles.

This is a bit of a puzzle for me. My first bathing suit as a very young kid was what they called a "tank suit", basically a speedo style, but different material. It fell apart, but I remember wishing I had it when I was given my next suit, the shorts style. My father and I had matching swim shorts, but they were uncomfortable. When I outgrew them I went with my mother to the store for a new suit and asked for another "tank suit", and got something of the kind, but with fairly wide sides.

Now I don't know where the influence came from, but that suit had really stretchy fabric, so I began rolling up the leg openings and rolling down the top edge to make it into a bikini. I didn't wear it like that out at the pool, though, just more of a private thing.

When I was 9 my school required that all young boys have a jock strap. I was fascinated by jock straps, my father had several different ones that he wore for sports, including swimming. The design really fascinated me, and I wore my jock fanatically at gym class. But after school was out, it was often my choice for underwear.

About the time I was rolling my swimsuit up and down into a bikini I developed a connection between bikinis and sexual arousal. Kind of early, but I don't really know. I found women in bikinis a huge turn on, but also found simulating a bikini with my swimsuit an early turn-on too. Then I got into the jockstrap, and that was a big deal. I literally wore that thing for years until it fell apart, then I sewed it back together again. It was small, and I grew, so it became pretty snug, and ultimately was involved in my first masturbation and orgasm experience.

I began wearing speedo swimsuits exclusively after joining the summer swim team. It was the team suit, a bright solid red. In off season it became underwear and got the roll-up, roll-down treatment as well. When that one wore out I went out and got my own suit. Speedo had introduced a more stretchy lycra suit and I went for that. I got mine a size or so smaller than recommended. Lots of guys wore speedos, it was actually the most common suit at the time. Our team coach wore one that really exhibited his junk, which sort of made me cringe just a bit. But he didn't care, and neither did anyone else.

So, hard to pick what the influence was. It was early, partly sexual, and partly I just liked the design. And speedos were everywhere then.

Sounds like your swim coach fitted the “stereotype “ often depicted in a particular genre of movie(lol).

On the subject of rolling up your costume. Perhaps you were influenced by pics of the Australian lifeguards who roll up their budgie smugglers to resemble a thong?
