I find the fit of a thong to be a set of qualities that change depending on the usage of the thong. The back strap tension is very important. Moderately gentle will make it comfortable, as will having it the right width, not to thin, not to wide.

Generally, you don't want it too tight or the time you can keep it on will be shorter. But not too loose either.

Then there are times when snug is better. I have a couple of contoured front, extremely thin side thongs, very stretchy lycra, but also fairly snug. These I use for...well, I put them on when I want...what I mean to say is...that thong lets me know it's there constantly by giving certain areas a massage. The result is a certain level of arousal continuously. That's great when you want it, not great if you don't.

I'd have to say, know your thongs, know what they're good for. Even the very snug (I've purchased a size or two smaller than normal) have their points. But so do the perfect fit ones. My custom BuffedBod swim thongs are so comfortable I can wear them all day, yet they provide just enough of a reminder to keep me a bit on edge. I have 5, and I don't think I have 5 of any other thong. I order the 1/2" micro, thong back.

Not so tight that the back strap hurts but the front pouch should be snug enough to feel a bit of compression.

Well, I just think that you always pick the appropriate fit as well. Mens thong hold the genitals at the right place.

As a boy, I liked the tight feel of swim bikini suits I had outgrown. Now I like to wear "slingshot" gaff thongs, which are very low, flat and snug in front and stay on in rough surf. The rear strap is wide enough to look like a T-strap and be comfortable even if I am tucked as flat as a girl. The modest flat look is fine at crowded public beaches.

I like my thong pouch to be a big snug so that there is no gaps around my scrotum. I like the thong strap to be comfortable so that I don't really feel it.
