I in turn remember the suggestion for paper knickers, more for women as cheap, disposable underwear during periods. Maybe it was meant all the time to combat infections, it's too long ago to remember fully.

Actually, my mother bought them for me. We were at K-Mart in the menswear section and she asked me if I wanted to try them. I quickly answered yes. That was in June of 1986. I was 15, and I never went back to tighty whities ever again!

They were just basic bikinis, cotton low rise brief looked much like the Jockey Elance Bikini Brief

My first string bikini was purchased when I was 13-14 and starting high school. I had seen them at K-Mart and asked my mom for a pair, she was reluctant at first but agreed. They were a 5-pack of Hang Ten and with sold and animal print - the classic vintage string bikini with elastic waist band. My favorite pair was the black/white zebra print - I wore them for years until they became so thin and too many holes and had to be trashed. I then found Joe Boxer, Hanes, and purchased two Calvin Klein string bikinis when I was 16 with my own money; I still have these two pairs today 22 years later.

Hang Ten and Brut were my first bikinis too. The zebra print string bikinis were my favorites too! K Mart also sold a brand called Brittania, do you remember them?

After K-Mart bikinis, I started wearing Jockey String bikinis and then Calvin Klein string bikinis.

I don’t recall the Brittania brand. But K-mart carried the Joe Boxer In string bikini and thong which I still have both of. Unfortunately they have been discontinued, they probably weren’t the best but they were nice for the price. And the Life by Jockey string bikini are nice for cheap/basic pairs

Brittania sounds very familiar to me. I'm thinking that may have been the brand of the first pairs I tried from Kmart. They had a fairly thick waistband. Probably twice as wide as the Brut brand. Brut is the brand I really liked from Kmart.

I started purchasing bikini underwear in the mid 1970s, which is also when I got my first of two Speedo semibikini swimsuits. But I wanted both minimal underwear and swimwear. I switched to the Jockey string bikini underwear as soon as I first noticed it, and continue wearing it to this day (now ordering it from Amazon). In the late 1980s and early 1990s, I ordered two matching string bikini swimsuits from Lynn's Lines in Florida. (They are well-made, and I still have them.) In late 2018, I purchased my Rio Microbikini fro Skinzwear and love it; I can't wait for my next trip to Ocracoke!:):):)
