I have done it, but at a nude beach.

Yes, as long as it's the same material as swimwear. No cotton and if it's been worn as underwear during the day, then absolutely not. That's just rude and disgusting.

Not a thong, but I have definitely worn my bikini underwear on beaches in the Caribbean. I plan to do it again too! 😂

You are absolutely right XM2212: No cotton and if it's been worn as underwear during the day, then absolutely not.
I wear my iSwim 'underwear' thongs as swimwear only. The fabric which I choose (WET) is about the same as swimwear fabric, just a bit thinner and stretchier. It feels like wearing next to nothing and it dries really fast.

I have a few thongs that are made of thick material, so they can pass as swimwear. Swim thongs can be quite expensive, so wearing thong underwear as swimwear could be a cheaper alternative.
That being said, if you're planning on swimming in a thong, I suggest you buy an actual swim thong. You want something that sticks to your body while swimming, and most swim thongs come with draw strings.

I would agree with that statement. As I've posted on another thread, I prefer swimming in a lap pool instead of open water . Unless it's a snug g string or thong, having a string tie helps keep it in place.
Here's one underwear from aliexpress I wore in Puerto Rico. I don't recommend for those that are large. I'm 5'3" and average for my size and this has the least coverage that still stays in place.

I have wore Lu Lu Lemon Thong and Tanga panties to the beach in Florida. near Cape Canaveral. I do not think you can really tell the difference without being super close.

I also wear Victorias Secret Bathing suit bottoms.

I never have gone in water in panties.

I have wore my JM Skinz Thong to the beach several times. It's underwear but it has the same lycra material as a swimsuit. It looks like. a swim-thong. Now there is no draw-string and can be conforming when wet. I need to size down but for now the large's fit but are baggy. I usually only walk the beach in them but don't get in the water.

Chlorine and chemicals used in pools can ruin fabric, so swimsuits are made with thicker material. Some underwear can be too thin and fragile for the pool.

Some swimwear fabrics are ‘chloride resistant’. But if you don’t rinse your swimwear thoroughly, chlorine will still spoil the fabric and elastic of your swimwear.
Since I only swim in the sea, I only have salt water as a reference. My iSwim ‘underwear’ suits (polyamide 88%, spandex 12%) are still in good condition. As soon ad I get home after a beach visit I rinse my thong suits thoroughly and dry them in a shady place.
