Well, in high school I guess the best "stereotype" for me was "sort of cool nerd." I definitely wore only bikinis and there were several others over the years that ran the gamut from football star to nerd. I'm not sure if that means I was one of the confident ones or not.
I also think that there was a bit of a sample bias because it seemed clear that others curated their underwear choice for gym days...I did not, as the only choice for me really was color/pattern and whether a bikini or string bikini. So that's what would have been seen. In college (probably no longer a youngster!) it seemed like more of the sports/athletes wore them, but not exclusively. Boxers were starting to creep in from what I remember from dorm living and late-night fire alarms!
I had a few different influences when I was younger. I wanted to be a bodybuilder, so I read a lot of fitness magazines. Bodybuilders always wore small bikinis to pose in. I loved how shiny most of them were. So I wanted small bikini underwear. I found bikini underwear that was a little shiny. And about that same time a friend started wearing the same kind. So I switched over to men’s bikini underwear. I did switch over to boxers for a few years, then back to bikinis. I also loved reading dirty stories about guys being forced to wear panties. Then a few years ago I just decided to only wear panties full time.
That's true too -- I had a couple of posing suits that I wore as underwear in high school and college. Similar interest from me in those, and I didn't really body build...although I was a sketch model for a couple of things. I would wear a posing suit for that.
At age 20ish I wanted to wear bikini underwear so I bought my own and as I live with my Parents and help them my Mother and I were at the mall and she needed new underwear as did I. She went to Victoria Secret and I said Mom can you come with me to get bikini underwear. She said sure because you help me I'll help you.
So driving to the store she said get as much as you need. Any style is fine. As a teenager I didn't really pay attention. At 20 I did .
So I got Us Polo association, Jockey Elance, Puma and others in bright colors.
My Mother said "well son you have class". When I came home my Father said colored bikini underwear wow that's new. I said its what my Friend wears. He said no problem. Now I know what to buy you when we go shopping.
I went to Europe and wore it and my Dad said he was going to buy some new underwear and he surprised me with French silk bikini underwear in colors and he bought some for him .
He said it felt great. Man I enjoyed it and every trip I buy more. Bikini Underwear is awesome.
My “journey” started more with swimwear than underwear. To start, my father would lay out by our pool in the backyard in speedos all the time so it seemed somewhat normal. I also grew up doing competitive swimming all the way through high school which further normalized speedos for me, at least in the setting of a competitive swimming pool. Around 7th grade (12-13 years old) I started wearing the speedos by my backyard pool just to get some sun and really enjoyed it.
This kicked off a slow transition to finding other, more “fashion oriented” suits instead of the competitive speedos. I first went to the 1” Solar from speedo. Then in high school I found bodybuilder posing suits which I quickly gravitated towards. Then one summer at 17 years old, while on vacation in Hawaii with my parents, I stumbled across some men’s thong swimsuits in a local dept store there. I was totally intrigued so I tried one on and ended up buying it. After that, I was hooked. From that point on I was always on the lookout for thong swimsuits. Eventually I discovered Skinzwear which provided me a source for all sorts of sexy swimwear.

I did swimming when I was little but stopped after I got DQ’d for a minor infraction. I wish I would have stuck with it, who knows how things would have shaped up differently if I had. I didn’t start with underwear there though but I always wondered if it somehow influenced me later in life.

Interesting story AZThonger! It's cool that you dad embraced speedos. I wish I had done swim team growing up and worn speedos at a young age. I didn't pick up swimming seriously until I was in my 30s. I'm curious, did you wear your thong swimsuit while on vacation with your parents in Hawaii?? Or hide it away for later?

That’s a whole other funny story. The first thong I bought I was by myself at the store. I didn’t tell my parents I got it. A few days later I was back at that same store with my mother. She knew/was supportive of me wearing my speedos/bikini brief style swimsuits. When she saw that same rack of suits she started looking through them. At one point she called me over, held up one of the thongs and jokingly said “How about this?” To which I replied with a straight face “Sure, why not?” She was a little taken aback but reconverted quickly and agreed “why not.” Said I already wore the speedos. So she bought me two of them. I never did tell her until a few years later that o had bought one a few days prior. I didn’t wear any of those things on that trip as her rule was that I could wear them by our backyard pool at home.

Wow! Very nice that your mom was so supportive of you wearing thongs. Thong underwear is one thing because no one really sees it. But thong swimwear, even if it was just at home, must have felt great to wear at that age.
