Unprepared, how to prepare

Post by David_NC »

So last night my wife is doing laundry, decided fold laundry on our bed - nothing new, but my daughter decided she was going to help. My wife dumped out some clothes to be folded, my thong underwear was mixed in. My daughter picks up a thong and the briefs I sleep and asks what is this. I was embarrassed and totally unprepared how to handle the situation. I just said there underwear and let me finish helping.
Daughter: what are they
Wife: a thong
Daughter: like a bikini
Wife: yes like a bikini, but smaller, men can wear those also
My wife handled the situation better than I did, but then continued with something like your dad is weird/gets embarrassed easily, I said yes I am a more private person. I just folded up the few left and put them in the drawer. The conversation ended and no lives were ruined that I am aware of. So my question, for those with kids, how did they discover or come to understand your underwear choice wasn't like everyone else? I'm not going to stop wearing thongs, so I guess I need to be better prepared to handle conversations with my child. Plus I now have the fear that she will, in front of anyone, say hey dad you got your thong on. I will then dig a hole, crawl in it and die. But we did say to her, that underwear is private and not to be discussed with anyone.

Sounds like your wife handled that like a champ! My kids have seen dad wearing skimpy underwear and haven't really said anything about it. I don't go out of the way to parade around in my underwear, but don't hide it either. I'm not sure they realize how different my underwear preferences are from other men yet. But, I have the same fear as you though, that they will spill the beans in front of family or friends. I would die too! I think the best thing is to not make a big deal out of thong underwear. Just be normal about it and explain that different people like wearing different styles if the subject comes up again. I would probably explain that I like smaller underwear because it's more comfortable to me and feels cooler. And yes I think you're advice to her that underwear is a private matter and not to be discussed with anyone is good. Although that's what we do on this forum lol!

I have used this affirmation before, but here goes again: "The only thing we have to fear is...fear itself." So, my question to the fathers on our forum (and anyone else, for that matter) is this: WHAT are you afraid of? We have to have the courage of our convictions for ANYTHING we do in life, and YOU KNOW THAT! What do you feel you have to hide in shame from your children, your friends, or other family members? Are you telling your spouse, partner, siblings or parents what YOU DEMAND they wear? Is YOUR choice THEIR business? Have you straight guys "gone gay" by wearing microwear? It sounds like you aren't too far from hiding under the bed, wetting your pants in fear, but that is EXACTLY what IS going on with the slobs who have nothing to do but complain and criticize others, because they are COWARDS and secretly envious of your "self-confident comfort!" ( Hmmm... Rather witty summary! :P ) Guitar T has summed it up many times in a positive manner: be friendly and confident. Self-assurance and a confident manner sees all of us through in any challenge we face in life, especially in our jobs (which I'm sure are varied). In my 36-year-career as a pharmacist (in both hospital and retail settings), I sought to carry myself with self-confidence and self-assurance (wearing string-bikini underwear the entire time!) More than one unruly patient in the retail setting got "The Quiet Stare" that sent them packing, brought down a few pegs by their own childish behavior. During my hospital career, more than one doctor got a call from me in the "wee hours" IF handwritten orders were NOT clear for both me and the nurse. (Again, the "courage of my convictions.") The point made of underwear being a private matter is definitely correct to make to children (although the children themselves may be fascinated about their "gift bonanza" on special occasions, with detailed descriptions of their new "wardrobe" on the playground). :D Wear what YOU want, when YOU want, and go "temporarily deaf" when the "yappin'" starts!

I've worn thong underwear my (now grown) kid's lives. I never made a big deal about it. They saw it in the laundry and hanging to dry. As far as I remember, they never asked questions about it (maybe) because I never made a deal about it and treated it just like any other underwear.

Sounds like you handled it well and your wife’s support was a great addition. This reminds me of a time I was getting dressed to head out and my youngest son came into my closet while I was wearing an aqua green bikini brief. He is six and he was pointing and laughing about my underwear, rather than scold him I just put up my arms like I was making a muscle and told him these were my Aqua Man underwear. Not sure why I said that it was just the first thing that came to my mind. He thought it was hilarious and his older brother this and they had a good laugh. If he happens to see me in my underwear now he just says daddy you have your strong man underwear on. I reply yep and keep it moving! Hopefully I’m giving my boys a positive self image of themselves so they will wear whatever underwear they choose as they get older.

Great story, BLK! Since children like to imitate what they see adults doing, who knows, your sons may want to try men's bikinis and thongs, too, just like their proud dad wears!

wow, Well, I don't have any kids, but I don't think I will hide my underwear, cause I wear a speedo and thong as a swimsuit and I don't want to go back to hide myself. so my children are going to grow in a positive environment, where regardless of what you wear, we should be good people.
But, prepare yourself thinking that your child is gonna say it in public, cause they are kids. but just in case that happens, just keep calm, and say... Yes, I like to wear something different, that's all.  and if people laugh, well, it will be embarrassing, but that won't change the fact that you are authentic in your underwear choice.

I was digging in the older unb podcasts and came across one from Dec 8, 22’ on this exact subject and it reminded me of this thread. Pretty good listen on the ride home from work.

I walk around the house in my bikinis all the time. It’s all my kids have ever seen all their lives, so it’s normal. No comments ever made or anything. As for my panty wearing, i typically only wear my wife’s and I keep that completely secret from everyone. And the only ones they see in the laundry basket are my wife’s, so zero explanation needed. In a day like today where I am wearing a pair of panties that my friend gave me, I’ll hide them after I wear them, and when I know my wife and kids will be away from the house for a while, I’ll throw them in the washer and dryer and they will be clean for the next time! 😂
