Men in bikinis during WWII

I came across this video. I wasn't aware that they made bikini swimwear for men that far back, and these were men in the US Navy serving aboard Naval warships. You'll have to scroll a bit, but there are a few pictures of US Nany personnel wearing bikini swimwear. zoom ahead to 2:48, 11:20 and 11:47.
The video says these are images from WWII, but some of the cars and aircraft shown are post WWII, looks like early to mid 1950s and possibly early 1960s

I remember seeing old black and white pics of servicemen wearing much skimpier swimwear than those featured here. I assumed some of the guys probably made their own posing pouches out of whatever material was available.
