I don’t think it sounds dumb at all, completely sensible to me and I wear thongs and g strings almost all the time, but there are times and places to wear more conservative bikinis. I think that’s the main thing if I’m in a situation where I tho k they could find out that’s when I’ll bring bikinis instead.

I have three layers of wearing undies / swimwear. My local beach I wear micro bikinis, sometimes see through undies, there is another local beach where I can get away with thongs and g strings and a third beach where I can wear anything or nothing at all.
I wear g strings under thin shorts to the gym all the time, no one has said anything, but you’d have to look at my bum pretty hard to notice, it’s all about respect I think.
), the "judgement" of others is NOT important, and NOT worthy of your time or concern. It is your personal choice, under your clothes. Listen to that pop song "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About" for a little inspiration in case the thong triangle pops out! 
) You could just as easily "return the favor" about "Mr. Congeniality's" "bored shorts" having enough fabric to cover a pony(!) As for the locker room at the gym, while I've wandered over from the "Bar None Bikini Ranch," the answer is the same: I've worn my string-bikini underwear to workouts for YEARS, I DON'T care what "they" think, I am NOT there to please "them," I am NOT cruising, and I wear WHAT pleases me!
