I’m a straight, married guy mid fifties with college-aged kids living in the Florida panhandle. I’ve been a regular lap swimmer for years, so Speedos started out as purely practical swimwear for the pool.
Over time though, they’ve just become my normal swimwear anytime I’m around water. Whether I’m boating, at the beach, hanging around a backyard pool, or at a resort, that’s what I wear. If we’re relaxing by the water I’ll usually just strip off my shorts and that’s that.
I’m not the type who walks around trying to show off or make a statement, but it’s also just completely normal for me at this point. My wife and kids don’t even blink an eye—it’s just what dad wears when we’re around the water.
I’m curious if there are other guys here in a similar situation where Speedos have become totally normalized in your everyday life around family and friends.
How did it become normal for you?
Do your spouse, kids, or friends react at all anymore, or is it just accepted?
Do you mainly wear them for swimming laps, or anytime you’re around water like boating, beaches, or pools?
Would enjoy hearing other guys’ experiences.
Any other guys who have completely normalized Speedos in everyday life?

I’ve always worn speedos right from when I first learnt to swim, so everyone I know accepts I wear speedos. It’s simple normal for me, I can’t imagine wearing shorts to swim in. Now my bathers are getting smaller and I often wear swim thongs to the beach. I get a few looks, a few compliments, if girls can wear thongs to the beach so can guys, speedos are more than acceptable.

I grew up wearing Speedo briefs and bikini style swimsuits. In my middle school years a Speedo was standard equipment for the pool. That easily transferred to the beach for me. By the time I got to high school my swimwear choices kept getting smaller and smaller. Not quite a thong yet, but I would roll up the back of my bikini to expose and much cheek as I could.
By the time I started college I discovered thong swimwear and slowly transitioned to wearing a thong more and more. I wasn’t quite ready to wear a thong around friends and family but did wear my Speedo bikini briefs without a thought. As I grew more confident things became my normal swimwear. Thong underwear became my full time choice as soon as I entered college. As a result my girlfriends all knew my predilection for minimal underwear and swimwear.
My family had no tolerance for thong swimwear. Even briefs would push their boundaries. So, I stopped all water actives with the family. My friends and partners all know and accept my choice of a thong. It’s no big deal.

I wear Speedos when thongs aren't allowed at public or private pools. I prefer least amount of acceptable coverage when swimming laps.

Yeah I've pretty much normalized them too in the same way. When my wife, kids, and myself are in the water, with very few exceptions, whether pool or beach I'm in briefs. And I'm the same as you in that I don't want to draw too much attention or show off, I just act normal and natural in them. I first normalized them with lap swimming about 10 years ago, then shortly after they became my standard beach swimwear. Nobody really comments on them. I really enjoy wearing them at the FL panhandle beaches too. I saw a guy over in PCB last month with some white speedos on!

Mine is still somewhat of a work in progress. I’ve been swimming laps in a Speedo for a while now and usually I’m the only one in the pool wearing one. Occasionally there will be another person wearing a swim brief but it’s not often.
Lately I’ve been expanding my swim brief wearing to anything with water also including beaches, boating, etc.

I’ve probably reached about 95% of the time in speedos or less. So not 100% normalized it. But close.

Coming from Australia, I think it's far easier for us (me) to normalise wearing a Speedo, or brief style, swimwear. They are part of our DNA. Speedo (the brand) originated in Australia. They were far more commonplace in the 60', 70's and 80's.
Right now there's a growing trend for men to return to doing so, headed by the Budgy Smuggler brand. Seems to be running in parallel with the huge trend for females to wear thongs/g-strings to the beach and pool. The 90's/2000's saw the trend drop right away for both sexes, only gaining momentum again in the later 2010's.
I certainly normalised wearing briefs for myself many years ago. I am a regular lap swimmer, and in public Olympic pools they are my go-to. I wouldn't consider wearing anything more.
For the last 12 months or so I have been lap swimming at 4am in the local Ocean Baths. I always do that in a thong.
I would say that in my early 20's I normalised brief wearing. I have always preferred the European style with slim sides, and took to wearing them any time there was water involved with whatever I'm doing. Swimming, surfing, in my pool, washing the car, hanging in my back yard etc. Didn't matter who was around me or where I was.
Mind you, I only chose the brief when I though a thong was inappropriate or I didn't quite have the nerve.
These days, while I still have a large collection of many styles of briefs, it's normally a thong for all of these activities.
