My own men's store?

Post by JustSomeDude71 »

From time to time I have entertained the thought of opening my own menswear store and (of course) offer a good selection of men's bikinis, thongs, string bikinis and jocks. Of course I will stock more conservative styles- boxer briefs and Y-fronts too, but only because there's a market for them. Since women are the majority shoppers in the average household, I would expect to see more women in there than men to shop for clothing options. I would be interested to see how many women come in to buy skimpies for their men.

Believe it or not I’d thought of opening g a undies for guys store a while back.
I guess though, brick and mortar store have so many overheads compared to online, not sure how profitable it would be, but the best of luck with it.
I’d certainly visit it, if I was closer.

It's not a store you want to setup, but a franchise of such stores worldwide, so we can each operate one. The trouble is, it's said that restaurant owners eat the profits, pub owners drink the profits, so would underwear store owners just wear-out the profits.

What would you need first before you could open my underwear/swimwear store?

One of our forum members (whom I talk to outside the forum here) rents a space at one of the local flea markets in his home town and sells a selection of men's bikinis and thongs. He says that most of his customers are teenage boys, while the rest consist of married couples, and single men. Apparently he has been successful enough in his enterprise that he's been doing this for about one year now. Very inspiring!

I always dreamt of having my own outdoor gear shop where I would curate and sell the gear I really liked. Then as I got older, I thought it would be great if I could carry a curated collection of men's and women's clothing, household goods, and a curated selection of men's string bikini and thong/g-string underwear/swimwear along with a selection of wife approved sexy underwear/swimsuits.

One can dream! I think I would get tired of it, and all the other business operations would consume too much of my time!

I think if you were in a larger market, you might be able to make some money with brick and mortar - especially if you could partner with someone that carries other complimentary items (and pair it with an online presence).

The niche shops that make it are the ones that know their local clientele, are visible in the community, and carry a curated collection (and not a bunch of mass produced junk).

You would have to have a solid business plan, accounting experience/resources lined up, point of sale, merchandising, retail location, marketing and digital media marketing, excellent credit to open up a line of credit with the vendors/landlords, or cash reserves to front your first order and pay yourself/staff. Some of that isn't hard, and you just need to hustle. It could be a total side hustle.

You could setup a shop at music festivals, alternative events, or lifestyle events that might cater to your clientele to build word of mouth and establish an online customer base before you go to brick and mortar. You could do popup events/popup stores. You could market at burlesque shows? You could setup and market to women to buy them for their male partners? You could partner with a burlesque troupe and hold a men's underwear fashion show at one of their shows?

I'm not familiar with alternative communities so much, such as lifestyle groups or whatever, but those could be marketing possibilities too.

You could cater to different clientele too. There are some progressive shops in Oregon that carry men's thong underwear alongside women's lingerie, and they also cater to folks in transition.
