Considering speedos at the pool?

Post by bs_2011 »

We're all at different stages of our 'bottom drawer' journey. For many of us who have been conditioned on boxers/board shorts, making a step to briefs, especially in public feels really scary. It shouldn't be though - they're a totally normal garment, practical, good looking, and no skimpier than what the ladies wear as normal. Before I became comfortable wearing a speedo/swim brief I used to read these kind of forums wishing I could have the courage to step out of the changing room in my speedos. Well if that's you, you can! And if you can do it once it will be easier to do it again. At my local pool they recently put up a big new poster on what is acceptable swimwear. First on the list with a picture - swim briefs. They're a totally normal and expected choice of garment to swim in, and it seems more guys are choosing to swim in briefs. No drag, good support, comfortable and dry quickly. I don't see why anyone would swim in anything else! Just do it!

Excellent post bs_2011! It took me a long time to work up the courage to wear swim briefs, probably several years. I wore jammers for quite a while to do lap swimming. Finally, I made the switch to briefs about 10 years ago and haven't looked back. Very, very few men in my area wear swim briefs for lap swimming. I only see 2 or 3 other guys at my ymca pool who wear them. The rest are wearing boardshorts and a few men wear jammers. Swim briefs are all I wear now in and near the water. A few months after I started wearing them to the gym pool I tried them at the beach. That was scary and took much more courage than wearing them to the pool!

I have the inverse experience. Since youth I've only worn Speedos (initially the actual brand) and nothing else. In my late 20's I went smaller, in my 30's, smaller. Gradually integrated thongs, but mostly for private swimming, sunning and other sports. Getting me to wear shorts was a problem! Hate them. I wear them when I must, but usually with something more "me" under them. I snip out that dreadful mesh liner (just painful). I'm now in my 7th decade, and will still wear bikinis and thongs when I can. And shorts because of the "old guy in a speedo" thing.

For perspective, my wife wore bikinis, then string bikinis, then at her "peak" a nice microbikini. I carry the photos even now. She still likes me in a thong. And I like her any way I can.

Back in the late 90s I joined a masters swimming group and conservatively wore my speedo brief under shorts for workouts. I was not that great of a swimmer at that point. About 3 or 4 sessions in, mid workout I couldn’t keep up and just stripped down to Speedo mid workout and tossed my shorts on the side of the pool out of necessity. It was like when we went from big box analog to HD television …but for my swim workout. I felt a little naked that day, but have never gone back to shorts. I am an avid speedo brief wearer anywhere there is water….workouts, beach, resort, pool or boat. For the sake of my wife, kids and family,!I usually don’t strut around and show off. Just for lounging and in the water. I don’t make a big deal out of it.

I’d say once you go with briefs, very hard to go back to shorts. Makes your time in the sun and in the water much more enjoyable. I think briefs look better on most guys than shorts.

I’ve been wearing speedo style swimwear for about forty years. What started it? I’m 5’5” and short legs. Regular board shorts made me look awful. High cut speedo style suited me well as I’m not the shy type. I like the attention. An odd thing: I don’t like to swim and hate getting in the water. Usually I just lie out by the pool. Chlorine kills a swimsuit.

Thanks to all the good camaraderie here on bottom drawer, I've finally worked up the courage rock my speedo next vacation. I'll start with it on under shorts on the beach, but I'll swim in the speedo.

Thanks, everyone!

I wish you the best and encourage you to rock the Speedo on the beach as well as the water. Once you do it you’ll find it a liberating experience. You might even get a complement or two.

I'm still weary about wearing them in public in most places because of my own anxiety. The last thing I want is unwanted attention. I just want to feel comfortable when getting into the water.

If in question…. I’d say go for it! When I pull my shorts off, in a funny way I like the quick stares I receive. Grab a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses and go for it. Even if I’m the only one there in a Speedo - beach, public pool, boat or backyard.

I always think I’d look better if I just, dropped a few lbs, was tanner whatever…. Then I say what the heck… and just go it.

Don’t ask for permission, wife, kids and friends will always be an initial “no.” They will normally adapt and accept it after about 5 minutes of wearing a Speedo…trust me. They need to see that no one else around the scene really cares. The only comments I’ve received have been totally positive…. From other straight dudes.

Great way to show how confident you are - all around. And in occasion, give the other guys around you the courage to wear a Speedo by representing.

Speedo style swimwear is not for the bashful. I see women wearing their LuluLemons and skin tight spandex shorts. If they can flaunt it, why not men?
