We wear thong because we are ok with our backside exposure to sun, wind, air.... and people looks. Someone loves more sun and others love eyes. I agree that g-strings is for more free/tolerant beaches compared to thong.
The solution of course isn't renouncing to string

Fashions comes and goes and turn back.
Loose pants, tight pants, touching floor or showing ankles.

Open this discussion about last limit: g-string used as swimwear. What's the difference with a mini string thong with a 5 cm triangle back? Just 10 cm² coverage only? I think no. It's a different way to go, say that we reached the limit of hiding nothing legally acceptable.
