I’ve been buying my own, with my own money, since I was 12. As children we did our own laundry so it never mattered what I wore. By the age of 16 I had every style available.

Huh, am I supposed to remember back then? Well yes I do, no prom for me but the same year I graduated(91), my girlfriend found out I wore small underwear. Oh, not that small it had more cotton than may have been found in a pill bottle.

I have never had or worn a thong swimsuit.
Underwear however is a different matter, I bought my first when I was 16. In the late ‘80s they were fairly easy to find. Thongs now make up about 70% of my underwear collection.

I tried to normalize swim briefs, my wife became so vocal that my daughters actually joined her. So now I only wear them in public with her or by myself. I do wear them at home almost exclusively.
