What's with America's craze for big underwear for men?

A place to talk about underwear in general that doesn't fit in thongs or bikinis.

What's with America's craze for big underwear for men?

Post by GenX_MCMLXXI »

Really huge underwear for men seems to be all the rage in America right now! Just about all brick & mortar stores stopped stocking ANYTHING resembling men's bikinis, string bikinis and thongs! Now all you can get are boxer briefs, which go up past your abs and down past your knees, or huge, baggy Y-front briefs that look like the men's version of granny panties! And it has been suggested by some that women set the fashion trends in underwear because they are usually the ones who buy underwear for their men. And the majority of women prefer boxer briefs over everything else! I just don't understand the attraction for really giant underwear for men and what it is that women find so sexy about them?! If American men started buying their wives big, giant, white cotton granny panties and made them throw out their thongs and g-strings, there would be a huge problem because women would be thinking that men have lost their minds- yet American men accept this as just the way it is with women!

I have no idea. I grew up with regular briefs, then switched to bikinis and low rise briefs, and finally to thongs and G-strings and I’m not going back.

To be fair, I don’t think it’s entirely Americas problem, we have a similar problem in Australia.
15 years ago I could buy some fairly sexy g string and thongs in Myers or David Jones (our big up market stores) but not any longer they only sell boxer trunks, same with bonds, no one sells any thongs!
I don’t know why, because I’ve not only stopped shopping at those stores for undies, but I’ve stopped shopping at any of them completely.
I buy my clothes from smaller stores that sell what I want and I buy almost 100% of my undies on line, so who’s the loser? Not me, I’m still get what I want at a better price and the big stores pay huge rents and don’t get to sell their rubbish to me. I’m the winner! Supply and demand wins outright, sell us what we want or go out of business.

I live in the US and I think overall we are a prudish nation when it comes to things like men's undies. I've got friends who have traveled all over and they've said that many other countries are fine with men wearing anything but big undies--speedos, thongs, G-strings and other similar brief undies are fine....but not in America. Even public nuditybon beaches, etc., is more easily accepted in places other than America...

Yes, I fully agree with all of this. I think you are right on point.

I also agree with Thonglover8k that I stopped buying my clothes at these places long ago. I'm certainly not interested in going back to big boxer briefs, I much prefer my thongs and bikinis.

I don't think it's that women particularly prefer boxer briefs on the men but they know that their man will most likely object or refuse to wear a sexy thong or bikini if she buys it for him to wear for her. maybe they secretly want to try these and wear them but they're ashamed that they're going to be thought of as less of a man, or a sissy for actually wearing a thong or a bikini; and maybe women don't know how to approach their men on this subject, so they just hope for the best- either that or they just continue to buy boxer briefs for their man, because they don't think he's not going to want to try anything else.

The only thing I buy from Walmart now (clothing-wise) are socks and gym shorts.

My guess is that the online market has pretty much taken over the fashion underwear for men. There are so many sites that you can go to and choices that that brick and motor cannot really compete, and they probably don't turn as much.
