For me it was the high school locker room and being able to see what guy’s waistbands had on it when bending over and sitting in front of me during class!! This was the mid-1990s!

I loved the look of them from the first time I saw them in advertising in a store or a catalog when I was 12 or 13. I wanted some right then! I was 16 before I was able to order a 3-pack from a Sears sale flyer and try them out. I was hooked! My mom wasn't real impressed when they came through the laundry, but she didn't ban them. Since then, I have worn most types of underwear, but bikinis are still my favorites.

Wow, so great reading other guys' experiences and seeing that many mirror your own. I was born in the early 90s and I think that I was always vaguely aware of men's bikinis and other similar underwear/swimwear even from a young age. I remember watching different shows and movies on TV and seeing the muscular guys at the beach wearing skimpy Speedos and bikinis, thinking how manly they were.

My dad had been something of a bodybuilding enthusiast from the 70s-80s, so I was used to seeing images of men like Arnold Schwarznegger and other bodybuilders wearing skimpy posing trunks so they could show off their muscles. I also remember my dad had some bodybuilding books he kept in his bookcases with pictures of men wearing posing trunks showing you how to do different exercises. Being Latino, it was pretty common to see Spanish telenovelas on TV and they would often have beach or pool scenes with the male characters wearing very skimpy bikini-style swimsuits. At the time it was considered the norm since they wanted to show off how macho and attractive their leads were.

For a long time, I had always struggled with my body image even as a skinny kid with nothing to worry about. I remember being mortified at the thought of other people seeing me shirtless, let alone in underwear or a swimsuit. I still remember the first time I went to the beach with my family, I only felt comfortable wearing a T-shirt and shorts and don't think I even got in the water. I still wore tighty whities of course, but deep down I remember wanting to have bikini briefs of my own to wear, but it would have been unthinkable as a kid for me to ask my parents if they would buy me any, not to mention it didn't seem like they made underwear like that for boys. Growing up, I always admired and was excited by macho muscular guys wearing bikinis and Speedos, but for whatever reason in my mind I believed that you had to have a great-looking body to wear that type of underwear or swimsuit.

Still difficult for me to comprehend statements like "I was born in the early 90s" and thinking that I was already in high school/college by then and had been wearing bikini briefs for a few years by then!   Sheesh, time goes by...

Same here. I don't care as much about not having the "right" body as much as I used to. I just want to feel comfortable at the beach. To me wearing board shorts like today is like just wearing a regular pair of shorts. If I want to get wet, I rather not have all this fabric soaking up so much water.

First I can remember noticing them was when I was young. I can remember my mom handing me a kohls magazine and pointing out a shiny pair of briefs/bikinis. That didn’t go over well me being so young so I didn’t get to try out other styles until I was on my own in college. Even then it was more of a curiosity then actually switching. I’d say it’s only been in the passed 3-4 years I have been actively pursuing different brands to find what I like the best.

I remember being fascinated by the packaging. I loved the little plastic tubes that they came in when I was a teen.

If you saw a guy carrying around one of those tubes at the department store, you knew exactly what he was wearing. I can remember popping mine open and pulling out the fresh pairs. It was an exciting experience for a young guy. Seeing the skimpy fabric and the exciting colors and prints

My story started as so many did, as a kid. I recall mum purchasing some fluro coloured (Bright pink, yellow, green) string bikinis that I loved! Those fluro pink were my favourites! I also recall stealing some panties out of my sister's bin, I wore them in secret. Catalogues, department stores all contributed to my love. Being the vast majority of catalogues are aimed at women, I poured over the lingerie sections again and again. I tried almost every variety of underwear I could find, but always came back to skimpy. I recall making a pair of briefs into a thong. I also recall as a kid a young guy trying on thongs at a camp ground communal shower and asking me which colour was best and what his girl might like. WOW I was hooked at that very moment. My first thong was from a department store a black silk number. Since I married I have gone in and out in what I wore. She preferred boxer briefs but I always wanted the minimal fabric possible. I have landed in thongs almost exclusively now for the past couple of years, she tollerates it and does not make demands, just as I tolerate her big briefs because that is her choice.

Do I like them? I suppose I got used to them then eventually they were mostly my go-to underwear before switching to bikini thongs and g-strings. Way before in the late 90s and early 00s, my mom basically controlled all the clothes my brothers and I wore. I was the eldest of 3 boys and we were all plump Asian kids growing up and even until today. My mom shopped for our clothes from the tops, bottoms, socks, shoes down to our underwear. When it came to underwear, it was all the same for all of us just in different sizes to match our age and waistlines but all were colorful bikini briefs. As far as I can remember, she never deviated from when I first got potty trained to when I was heading into my late teenage years. Embarrassing as it sounds, I wore printed brightly colored bikini briefs (the ones with like a single socker ball or super hero picture in front and plain throughout) until I was 13 and only switched to Jockey Elance tanga bikini briefs and Hanes string bikini briefs when I turned 14. I wore mostly the blue and black ones and they really stood out underneath my khaki colored school pants when they had a habit of peeking out. Now I'm not afraid to admit, that unlike my brothers, I had an odor problem all over my body, not extremely bad but the pediatrician did take note of this and I guess the solution was for me to wear sleeveless undershirts (and tank tops when outside school) and underwear with lesser coverage to keep cool as its likely because I break out into dripping sweat at the slightest exposure to the outside humidity. This measure of having to wear more skin-exposing clothing was more of a requirement for me than it is for my brothers as they didnt smell. Singapore is a very hot and humid country so I can see why there was an abundance of bikini briefs and tank tops for my mom to buy for me and my brothers. Anyway, I've only known bikini underwear throughout my life and I grew to like them that I shop for my own nowadays as an adult. I've since gotten rid of my old bikini underwear which tends to be tight for someone of my girth as they were pure cotton and not modal, switched to thongs and g-strings especially the latter. I wear thongs everyday to work and when going out with friends. Only a handful of people know and I'm happy they dont judge. To be honest, the bikini briefs with the single sport or superhero print in front drew more judgmental eyes than when people found out I'm wearing thongs despite the social stigma in Singapore about thongs being a gay kind of underwear.

Now for bikini-like swimwear like Speedos or swim briefs, I think it was more of a requirement for those like us who were into water polo as youths. Underneath the water polo briefs which was kind of the uniform, my mom had us three kids wear like a diving bikini brief underneath as like underwear for more support, so obviously the side fabrics were a lot narrower and the back coverage was a less than the waterpolo brief itself so our "pool underwear" wont be seen. In the past, there was this really retro design for speedo and arena, like really narrow sides and a full front and somewhat 3/4coverage backside. Yes this is what I wore underneath my water polo suit. After each practice session, I'd play around with the rest of the kids without the water polo brief and in just my diving bikinis. As far as I can remember, from the moment I was a beginner at 11 years old, up to when I stopped at like age 16. Pretty much the same diving bikini brief under my water polo brief. Now, I wear the Speedo Eco-solar athletic brief something like that, the 1" side one in black. I've gone to excursions with my friends from our hobby-shop club and I've worn this bikini type brief in front of them even without a rash guard shirt on. Even if it drew some roaring laughter at first since the boys always poke harmless fun at my short height and weight, nowadays nobody cares anymore which is great. It's just a swimsuit and I like it because it's comfortable. I understand why my mom got these. Embarrassing as it may seem at first, right now people can judge, I'm after the comfort.
