Men wearing bikinis were also ubiquitous on Venezuelan TV in the late 90s/early 2000s. Some of these shows were imported to the US, in particular the show Bienvenidos, a sketch comedy show somewhat like Mad TV or You Can't Do That on Television. They filmed a lot of sketches at pools or beaches and it was pretty common to see male extras in the background wearing very skimpy bikinis.

In general, I believe these scenes were flimsy excuses at having entire scenes full of bikini-clad attractive women for the benefit of the macho, straight male audience and showing off men was more of an afterthought. Occasionally you would have the male actors in bikinis too, but rarely as eye candy. Actor Ernesto Cortez was often used in these scenes playing a character named Enrico, who had a very manly appearance (burly hairy "dad" body, but not a macho leading man type), but the punchline of the scene would invariably be that he was actually an effeminate gay man. A lot of his scenes of him wearing swimsuits are up on Youtube.

I remember "Bienvenidos" and those episodes. Man, how times have changed! When I suggested to my mother recently that I would want to wear shorter or skimpier suits to the pool, she was concerned that I don't get something "too short" or "revealing" even though she saw my late father in them in the 90s and it wasn't an issue then.

As for Ernesto Cortez, I like the cut of the suits he wears on many of those episodes. I'm going to find me some similar ones with drawstrings and wear them when I go to Miami next January. Or find some local opportunities sooner.
